This is definitely my most eventful & significant posting so far. Healing is just plain fun. Watching people who are held captive be set free (in this case physically & spiritually) is exhilarating. I am going to document 6 people who were physically healed yesterday and 3 whose eternity changed forever, but before I do, I have to explain what happened Saturday afternoon.
Every month, I attend a workshop that teaches about and demonstrates the spiritual gifts of the Bible. My healing ministry began as a result of these workshops, as did the prophetic manifestations recorded on this blog. This weekend, Kevin Dedmon was our teacher. Kevin has decades of experience in signs and wonders, healing, the prophetic, etc.
Kevin taught us our “Healing Heritage” which was a detailed history of the church’s Modern-Day Healing Movement. In that history was a FASCINATING account of a hippy named Lonnie Frisbee who was primarily responsible for Calvary Chapel’s growth as well as John Wimber’s introduction to and emphasis on healing (which started the “Vineyard Movement”). I had heard about this man for quite some time, but never knew his name.
Like Elijah giving his “mantle” to Elisha before he died (2 Kings 2:9), Frisbee gave his “mantle” of anointing to Kevin Dedmon (although several others asked Frisbee for it before he passed away). Yesterday, Kevin gave those of us in that room that same mantle and it meant everything to me. Frisbee made it clear before he died that he wanted that mantle distributed to many people. It doesn’t sound all that dramatic as I write it, but it was. My heart felt like it was going to beat right out of my chest. I literally held my heart for many minutes because it was beating so fast.
Elisha so coveted Elijah’s mantle that at the end of Elijah’s life, when he tried to get Elisha to leave his presence, Elisha refused every time (vs. 1-2, 4, and 6). He also refused to have anyone speak about the fact that Elijah was dying (2 Kings 2:3 and 5) because he wanted the mantle passed to him when Elijah died! Because of this Biblical precedent, I take Frisbee’s mantle very seriously. AND…I COULDN’T WAIT TO USE IT.
Yesterday at church, I prayed for a woman named Connie who three weeks ago was diagnosed with medial meniscus in her left knee. When she runs, the knee completely “goes out” in dramatic fashion. While praying for Connie, she described feeling heat.
When you were praying, I felt heat touch my knee like a fireplace poker!
Heat is BY FAR the most common symptom of healing, so both of us were very encouraged. Even though the doctor told Connie to stay off the knee, she is so convinced of her healing that she is going to test it out by running this afternoon.
UPDATE (10/3/10): Connie texted me this message…
Well, sinus attacked this AM so I tried to run, but chose to walk 4 miles versus running 1 or 2. I NEVER FELT THE KNEE…I couldn’t even tell it was there! Now, if the rest of my body would feel as good as the knee!
Another person I prayed for at church yesterday is Joel. This is a fun account because when it comes to any miraculous event, I look for authenticity. Joel is very conservative when it comes to this sort of thing and has NO PROBLEM saying that nothing has changed if, after prayer, nothing has changed. I think most people are this way, but I like when I KNOW that someone I’m praying for is particularly authentic with their reaction.
Joel told me that ever since sustaining a gym injury in 1994, he has suffered severe pain in his lower back.
It’s a shooting pain from my back to my buttocks and then through my leg. The severe pain is constantly on and off. When it’s on, it feels like someone has taken a knife and stuck it in my back. Every time I move, it feels like someone is twisting the knife. During the times when it’s not so painful, a dull pain is still present. When I was in college, I had to literally crawl out of bed to the bathtub to treat my back.
We claimed healing over Joel’s back in the name of Jesus.
How does your back feel?
It feels 50-75% healed!
Let’s keep going. If it took Jesus more than one prayer with the blind man, we can certainly keep praying.
We prayed again.
How do you feel? Move around.
It feels about the same.
We prayed a third time. I asked Joel to test out his back and move it in ways that would normally bring pain.
What percent is it gone?
100%. It’s gone!
Sixteen years of bondage and now Joel is set free!
After church, I had lunch and then decided to go to the Swap Meet and look for more people to heal. This is something I have wanted to do for a while. When I arrived, I realized I only had an hour, so I got busy.
While looking for people with some kind of physical infirmity, I asked God to direct me to someone who was suffering. Due to the airing of a popular football game, there were not many people at the Swap Meet. Finally, I saw Jeffrey, a boy who was about 9 years old with an eye that looked different from the other.
Excuse me. What happened to your eye?
Jeffrey (with a Mexican accent):
After asking his name, I realized that Jeffrey knew very little English. Mustering what little Spanish I know, I asked if I could pray for his eye. When he consented, I put my thumb over his eyelid and spoke healing.
Because of the language barrier, it was VERY difficult to communicate with Jeffrey, but I was able to figure out that he felt something while I was praying. He couldn’t explain what the difference was, but he insisted that he felt something during the prayer. He also noted that the pain went away during the prayer.
When I got home from the Swap Meet, I still felt hungry to heal. I decided to go to Tijuana, Mexico. I had an image in my mind of people who were desperate to be healed. I texted eight of my closest friends to accompany me, but nobody would go. Realizing I was in “rare air,” I became even hungrier. Due to several things I wanted to get done before I left, I decided to make it a late evening trip.
9:30pm: I arrive in Tijuana with a bilingual Bible.
On one of the foot bridges (the one that crosses the river), I met Jesús, a man around 60 years old. I noticed him because I was looking for people to pray for and he had a cane.
Me (attempting Spanish):
Excuse me, can I pray for your leg?
Ok, but it’s my knees.
I realized that Jesús spoke English. What a break! After praying, he didn’t experience any immediate physical changes, but felt comfortable opening up to me about a sad and complicated relationship problem he was having.
I’ve never talked to anybody about this before. For some reason, you inspire trust.
I think God brought me to you so I could pray for this issue. God doesn’t want you to struggle.
9:45pm: As we were talking on the bridge, I noticed a man with a leg brace and crutches passing by.
Me (in Spanish):
Excuse me! Can I pray for your leg?
The man (Dario) started talking fast in Spanish. I couldn’t catch up, so I assumptively had Jesús translate. Dario consented to prayer, so I touched the affected areas of his leg as I prayed.
Dario (in Spanish):
My leg feels much better! When you said, “Holy Spirit come,” I felt a relief that I have never felt before. When I closed my eyes, it was dark, but then I saw a light.
Having introduced Dario to the Kingdom of God through healing, I felt it appropriate to introduce him to the King.
Do you have God in your life?
Do you want God in your life?
Dario (looking at the ground, thinking about the power of God he has just witnessed):
With that admission, I read John 3:16 in Spanish from my bilingual Bible and then I led Dario in a prayer of repentance where he accepted Jesus Christ. Because Jesús had been dodging my questions about God, it was awesome to see him translating the sinner’s prayer for Dario.
Me (to Jesús):
God is going to bless you for doing His work tonight!
10:20pm: Another man (named Martín) with crutches and a wrapped-up leg passes by.
After telling Martín (through Jesús) the healing miracle Jesús and I have just witnessed, Martín gives me permission to pray for his leg.
I can move my leg now! I couldn’t do that before! Look!
We pray a second time.
The pain is now completely gone!
Move the leg around.
It is moving even better than after the first prayer.
As all this is happening, I couldn’t understand why Jesús didn’t get healed. Then it dawned on me: Jesús’ purpose in being there was to be my translator. I would have been sunk without him! God had ordered my entire day down to every last detail.
11:04pm: While talking further with Jesús, I notice a man (Victor) in a wheelchair being pushed by a woman (Linda).
Immediately, I can tell that Victor is the reason I came to Mexico. He is covered with sores and the sores have confined him to the wheelchair. His feet, as well as other areas, are covered in bandages. He and Linda told me the sores are actually cysts that have plagued him for a year and a half. Doctors don’t know why he has them.
Looking at Victor, I was reminded of the lepers from Biblical days. Leprosy was a contagious skin disease that isolated those who had it. Jesus healed the lepers and, as Jesus’ hands and feet, I (through the power of Jesus) was going to heal Victor’s body.
What did you feel?
Lightheadedness…and goosebumps. It felt really good. I can’t explain the feeling. My whole body felt light…like I was floating!
Getting excited and feeling faith swell, I told Victor and Linda that God gives these sensations to stoke the flames of our faith. We prayed again.
What did you feel?
The pain in my finger is almost completely gone!
On a scale from 1-10, how bad was the pain before?
10…and now it’s down to a 1! This finger was the most painful of the sores! I couldn’t even push the wheelchair! Now look!
Victor started pushing himself in circles.
Let’s keep going!
Victor showed me a cyst under a bandage on his left thigh. I don’t know how to describe it (and the photo barely shows what it looks like in person). The cyst was discharging puss around the loose flesh. All I could think was “This is the work of the enemy. It must be destroyed.”
During the third prayer, Victor’s feet and finger started jumping. We all got excited.
Though I put my fingers on the bandage where the cyst (on his thigh) was, the cyst still looked the same after the prayer. A sickening realization came over me (that I believe was from the Holy Spirit): I needed to do the unthinkable. I needed to hold my finger directly on the cyst…skin to skin…while praying. I asked permission and began to do so. After the prayer, the cyst looked the same. Whether to test my humility or to teach them something, I absolutely believe I was instructed to touch that cyst–to touch someone who is considered untouchable–something that still makes me sick to my stomach to think about.
While sharing my intention to keep praying, Victor and Linda politely informed me that they had to buy groceries and pay their rent before it got too much later. I asked if I could take just a few more minutes and they agreed.
Do you think God is trying to get your attention?
Victor and Linda (nodding their heads):
We were going to take the taxi tonight (instead of walking across the bridge). We always take the taxi. I don’t know why we didn’t.
He (God) has been trying to call us to Him.
From there, I led Victor and Linda in a prayer to receive Jesus as their savior and they happily surrendered their lives to him.
I spent the next few minutes instructing both of them about how to continue to pray for Victor’s healing. I made it clear that there is nothing special about me.
Now that you have put Jesus first in your life, you have the same authority as I do. Continue to command healing over your flesh.
Giving them my information, they promised to update me.
12:35am: Celebrating the 6 healings and 3 new members of God’s Kingdom, I ate enchiladas in front of a mariachi band at La Vuelta (my favorite restaurant in Mexico).
1:43am: Exhausted, I drove home.
“…For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.’Therefore I want you to know that God’s salvation has been sent to the Gentiles, and they will listen!”For two whole years Paul stayed there in his own rented house and welcomed all who came to see him. He proclaimed the kingdom of God and taught about the Lord Jesus Christ—with all boldness and without hindrance!”
